The theme of the kovshes examined in this article, I enthusiastically style ‘The Falconer’. The best known example of this design was offered by Christie’s London (November 26, 2012, lot 284):
‘A highly important monumental gem-set parcel-gilt silver kovsh. Marked K. Fabergé with the Imperial warrant, Moscow, circa 1901, scratched inventory number 24682.” The description further details the cast figures as: “ … a falconer raising his right hand and holding a falcon, wearing a traditional Russian, costume on a galloping horse, … ”

The scene continues on the right side of the vessel, depicting additional falconers; while on the left side, the head of a second steed charges forth from the prow of the kovsh. Detail of a captivated boy and girl take in the scene. The handle, arching from the rear is decorated with ‘foliate strapwork roundels’, and set with two cabochon moonstones. The interior is gilt. The piece is marked both under the base and under the wing of the falcon. In a previous sale (Sotheby’s, Geneva, May 20, 1997, lot 290), the provenance is listed as the Nobel Family, presented by the family to Hans Nobel, director of Brothers Nobel, Sweden, and head of the Baku branch of the company, on his 50th birthday in 1909.
