1820 2 small Oriental Hilditch Chinese Falcon Trainer Child's Plates

#AD245

These are red 200 year old Georgian era English pottery children's tea set plates. They are primitive and wonderful. They "clobbered" in Chinoiserie design and colours over red transferware. They depict a Chinese falconer or trainer with 2 birds on a stick, in typical oriental elements and setting. They have pottery factory soot stuck to the edges, and are rustic with great early character.

These two early unmarked miniature pieces are attributed to Hilditch & Sons, who did much of this type of early work, and in red. They were manufacturers of earthenware and porcelain at Lane End, Staffordhshire from 1822-1830, in the Georgian pre Victoria era. Their pieces are more often unmarked.

The term clobbered in the pottery world refers to painting over existing decoration, as in hand colouring in enamels. Sometimes the artists (or children workers, as it were) added to the decoration, sometimes they simply disregarded it. The term originated in Holland with the Delft trade. The English began to realize they could order the most inexpensive Chinese Export wares shipped to England, and then overpaint them in imari colours themselves. Here the red transferware pattern has been hand decorated and overglazed with polychrome enamels.

There are no chips, cracks or repairs, but there is original factory soot, as seen. They were found in Kingsbridge, Devon, England. Click images to see condition in close up views. They are small, and measure 5.25 inches each in diameter, fitting in the palm of your hand. The falcon or falconry bird motif is a wonderful attribute on its own, and they display brightly on a shelf.
