Early 17th century AD. A flat silver hawking ring or vervel for the use in falconry, with italic inscription 'George Ashton of *' to one face, plain reverse, using long 's'. See Rev. A.R. Maddison Lincolnshire Wills: Second Series A.D. 1600 - 1617, Parts 1600-1617 will XVI (John Dighton"). Recorded with the Portable Antiquities Scheme under reference WMID-16CD27. Provided with a printed extract from Maddison's book mentioning George Ashton. 0.62 grams, 11mm (1/2"). Found Lincolnshire, UK; in 2013. The ring was found at Minting, Lincolnshire. George Ashton was evidently a local dignitary of the early 17th century in this part of Lincolnshire. The will of John Dighton, dated 18th December 1606, names George Ashton and his wife Marie (Mary) as executors of his will in respect of gifts to the poor and needful of Minting, Baumbrough, Hatton, Swabie, Ashby beside Grymsbie and Wolley in Yorkshire. Fine condition.
