Fernán González (died 970) was the first autonomous count of Castile, son of Gonzalo Fernández de Burgos, who had been named count of Arlanza and the Duero around the year 900, and by tradition a descendant of semi-legendary judge Nuño Rasura. His mother Muniadona was so well remembered that the later Counts of Castile would sometimes be recorded by Iberian Muslim scholars as Ibn Māma Duna (descendant of Muniadona).

Comments from Francisco Javier Rodríguez Viñuelas:

I send you two images of a bronze statue located in Navalcarnero (Madrid). It's part of a sculptural ensemble that honors the birth of the kingdom of Castilla.
According to the legend (appears in the POEMA DE FERNÁN GONZÁLEZ, an extensive epic poem) Count Fernán González sold, for little money, his goshawk (azor) and his horse to the King of León. The sales contract contained that if they were not paid, the amount would increase twice every day that the payment was not made. It increased so much that when the Count Fernán Núñez, in the face of the laziness and dismissal of the King of León, claimed the payment, it was such a large amount of money that he had to grant the independence of Castilla as payment.
